eCBS & Dan Rather, a week too late, has admitted, kinda, that the Bush Guard memos could not be vouched for "journalistically". A euphemism for "oops, we got caught." Playing the victim, they stated that they were "misled" on how the source for the documents came into possession of that person. They could not prove that the documents were "authenticate". A euphemism for "oops, we got caught." That & "some of the questions raised in public" led Rather to a point where if he knew then what he knows now he would not have aired the story. (Ya think?!). Another euphemism for, "oops, we got caught."
Rather continues, "But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism."
Here's the real deal: Rather claims they've been working on the story 5 years. They were warned by 2 document experts that the documents were probably fake. The source of the memos is a Kerry supporter & fund raiser. The one handwriting expert they used was not self admittedly qualified to examine the memos. Yet they proceeded to air the show.
Within hours of airing, bloggers determined the memos were fake & were quickly followed by dozens of qualified document examiners who called the memos fake. But Rather & eCBS with their arrogant heads up their butts responded by saying they had irrefutable proof the memos were real. Rather brusquely waived off those who questioned them as "partisan."
Well, they dug their own hole. Now they can wallow in their own mudraking. They have still to use the word "fake" while covering their tracks & they still need to come clean about a possible connection to the Kerry camp. In their rush to help Kerry & bash Bush they got caught in a fraud. This from the network which claims it has a tradition of reporting without favoritsm, which in itself is a fraudulent statement.
